Internship in the rural Midwest proved incredibly difficult as a young, single lesbian woman in a family oriented -- homophobic congregation. Internship was also the most blessed experience of my life as I met the woman I love! The tragic irony in this is that because of this beautiful woman I survived my internship and because of my relationship with her I may be removed from the candidacy process. To be ordained I MUST sign a statement of Celibacy my whole life long. I have to choose either to lie to be ordained, deny my call to ministry, or live in hiding the rest of my life. Throughout my entire life I've been incredibly supported by my church family and had great experiences in seminary and the candidacy process, but they don't know who I am or my relationship with the woman I so dearly love.

Pray with me that the Church will today accept the gifts I and so many others bring to restored ministry in the "Kingdom" of God. May we all stand together as one loving family!

              <text>
"Called Out" was a gathering of LGBT seminarians that met for many years in Chicago either at McCormick Theological Seminary or CTS. Although students from all over the U.S. and from many denominations came to the conference, it tended to attract large numbers of Presbyterian seminarians from the central third of the country. This was due in part to strong Presbyterian leadership over the years, especially Marilyn Nash, who contributed countless hours of organizational work and creative worship design to the conference. (Marilyn Nash's story can be found under her stole entry, #396.)

This spirited, faithful, hope-filled group of young people left the conference prepared to transform the church and the world. It is fitting, then, that when dripping candle wax from their closing worship service left a large round stain on the stole, someone took pen in hand and transformed the stained spot into a bright, cheerful sun!

Martha Juillerat
Founder, Shower of Stoles Project
2006
</text>

This is one of about two dozen stoles donated by members of DUPC in early 1996. Most of the stoles arrived without names or narratives. However, we have been told that most of the donors are "out" LGBT persons, unnamed but not necessarily anonymous.

DUPC was at the center of a pivotal moment in the history of the Welcoming movement in the Presbyterian Church. In 1978 the General Assembly acted to bar the ordination of "self-avowed, practicing homosexuals." However, an exception was added to the action which exempted those ordained before 1978 from future judicial action. This clause allowed DUPC in 1991 to call the Rev. Dr. Jane Adams Spahr to become a co-pastor of the church; Janie had been ordained prior to 1978. However, the church broke its trust and in 1991 the denomination's highest judicial body barred Janie from being installed. In response, DUPC called Janie to be an "Evangelist," and formed That All May Freely Serve to allow Janie to preach, educate and challenge church structures at DUPC and throughout the country.

              <text>
Anonymous stoles found their way to us over the years by many means: left on a chair, passed through a third party, sent to us without a return address, or put in a box with other stoles being returned from a display. On three occasions, someone found a way, carefully and quietly, to rearrange stoles that had already been hung on a line at a display, adding theirs to it without being seen. We would discover the stole when we began to take down the display. Scott's stole was found this way. It was added to a display at a conference of the More Light Churches Network at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR in 1997. No note was left with the stole. It is identified only by the name "Scott" written on it. We assume from the reference to More Light, and its addition at this particular conference, that Scott must be Presbyterian. We have never learned anything else about him.
