<text>
FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Cottage Grove, Oregon

We are two elders at the First Presbyterian Church in Cottage Grove, Oregon. After the Shower of Stoles Project was displayed at our church, we decided that we wanted to make a stole to honor the men and women in our denomination who are denied ordination because of their sexual orientation. This includes members of our congregation, members of our families, and many of our friends. The stole was worn by our minister for a dedication in which our congregation participated. Many of our signatures appear on the back of the stole. Thank you for the Shower of Stoles Project. You are all in our prayers.

– De Martysus and Christine Heritage

DEDICATION OF THE STOLE

To the glory of God and the enrichment of the worshiping community,
We dedicate this stole.

In thankfulness for the love, imagination and hands that created it,
We dedicate this stole.

To the end that we may include all those who are called into ministry,
We dedicate this stole.

To the end that the unity and harmony of the church may better reflect the inclusive and intimate love of God,
We dedicate this stole.

That the holy purposes of God revealed to us in the worship life of the church may draw us into a closer communion and full acceptance of all God’s people.

We are the people called United Methodists in the downtown of Appleton, Wisconsin, a community of approximately 78,000 in the Fox Valley in the north-eastern part of the state. As of this writing I am serving as the Senior Pastor, and it was our honor to host the Shower of Stoles Project at our church the last week of Lent and culminating on Palm Sunday. I am sure I do not speak for all, but do speak for many in saying that these dates are quite appropriate as we do our own repentance of categorical exclusion of persons who are called to ministry.

We join the many who pray for a new day moving forward. May there be a day when all are welcomed to the Table, all whom are called of God.

EVERY TENTH PERSON IS A HOMOSEXUAL
A careful reading of the Kinsey Report and of Statistics compiled by police, doctors, social workers and homosexuals themselves indicates one in ten to be a conservative estimate of the current homosexual population. That is eighteen

million American men and women.

"The word 'homosexuality' does not denote a course of conduct, but a state of affairs, the state of loving your own, not the opposite sex, it is a state of affairs in nature. One should no more deplore 'homosexuality' than left-handedness. (One can condemn or prohibit acts of course; that is another matter. But one cannot condemn or prohibit homosexuality, as such.)

"Secondly, the label 'homosexuality' is misleading. People are not either homosexual or heterosexual. Most people are predominantly one or the other; most in fact are predominantly heterosexual; many are one or the other; most in fact are predominantly heterosexual; many are predominantly homosexual; many are attracted to both sexes fairly equally and may be pushed one way or the other by circumstances, convenience, and social pressure. Before we assume that homosexuality is bad and heterosexuality is good, we should recognize that homosexuals are no more necessarily promiscuous than heterosexuals are necessarily chaste. They may be similar people (or even, it will be realised, the same person) and have similar moral values. But of course, where a heterosexual finds blessing in marriage, a homosexual cannot; and many of the pressures designed to hold lovers of the opposite sex together have the effect of tearing lovers of the same sex apart; it is hardly surprising then that most homosexual affairs (at least amongst men) are less durable than most heterosexual affairs ... This stole was made in honor of all those who have found themselves, and now courageously live their Christ light in their world, ministering to ALL of God’s people, whether they belong to a church or not. It is a stole honoring the full spectrum of God’s creation, unlike the church seems able to do fully at this time. I pray that it will give hope of the wholeness of all, through the strands of time. Dear Friends:

Welcome home to Anna. Sorry I cannot be with you but I find that I am booked to see Professor Carstairs in Edinburgh about writing a Pelican on psychopathic personality, and am loathe to let the opportunity slip.

I have made some notes on the Female Homosexuality piece which I though excellent, and enclosed stencilled copies of the bits I was to write.

Hope you have a good meeting. See you in November? For goodness' sake, it's time we had this thing published!

All the best,
