She says, “I am called to be present and attentive to the needs of those considered to be the least of these. Christopher George was a man of God with a welcoming spirit and a heart of compassion. Christopher’s spiritual journey began in the Church of England, where he grew up. In his early twenties, he immigrated to Canada where he met is life partner of 35 years, Gordon Allsopp. Christopher experiences a call to ordained ministry and began to explore his call with the Anglican Church of Canada. He discovered they were unable to incorporate his spirituality and sexuality with the same level of comfort that Christopher had, and this left him feeling unable to follow God’s call on his life.

In the late eighties, Christopher and Gordon began attending MCC Winnipeg where they were joined in Holy Union. This began Christopher’s journey with MCC and again stirred his call to ministry. In 2000, he was ordained at MCC Lubbock, TX by Rev. Elder Troy Perry, the found of Metropolitan Community Churches. Christopher served as Associate Pastor of MCC Lubbock and as Senior Pastor of Victory Garden MCC in Clovis, NM. MCC provided him the opportunity to live out his faith as an openly gay man, and fulfill the lifelong call of God in his heart.

This stole was made for Christopher by his sister-in-law, and represents his firm belief in a God who loves all people unconditionally and who binds us together with the grace and peace of Christ.
</text>

The call to ordained ministry. As I look back, it was a call that has been on my life since I first said “yes” to God as a freshman in high school. I just kept saying no for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons was that a gay man couldn’t be a minister, according to my conservative bible college professors and pastors during that period of my life.

In 2004, God got really serious, or maybe I started listening better. The first time was around the communion table at Lake Harriet Christian Church, where I heard the message of extravagant welcome, that all are welcome around the table, period, end of sentence. God accepted me as I was, and, in fact, loved me because of it. In that sacred moment, I heard God’s call to return to ministry, that God wasn’t done with me yet.

On October 15, 2008, a crisp fall day at West Des Moines Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the people of the Upper Midwest Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) overwhelmingly voted to allow ordination of all of God’s children, lifted a 20+ year ban on such ordinations. That day, God tapped me on the shoulder and reminded me of the call, and in 2010, I started my seminary education.

February 28, 2015 marks an important day in our region’s history, and for our wider church. I will be the first openly GLBTQ person ordained since the ban was lifted. The beauty of extravagant welcome, of “All Means All” will be on display for the church and all to see, and we will dance in the grace and delight of God.

About the stole
This stole was the first stole I ever purchased, when I entered into the Licensed Ministry Program of the Upper Midwest Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 2005.

Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Indiana

As a Closeted Lesbian, I served as a senior pastor of a mid-sized congregation and worked as a teaching pastor in the Indianapolis area. I had just received my Doctor of Ministry degree from Christian Theological Seminary when I came OUT in 2000.

Later that year, my judicatory “lost” my personal file, including my contact information and all documentation that I had ever attended seminary, been ordained, or served the church as a pastor.

For years, I heard nothing from our Region. I had been in Search and Call, hoping to be called to a new parish, but communications quit coming. I gave up seeking a church as I had to make a living, and returned to my previous vocation as a registered nurse.

Finally, in 2010, it came to my attention that I no longer had standing in Indiana. When I made this discovery and petitioned our Region for reinstatement, I was told that, now that I was OUT, I was not eligible for be re-instated as Clergy with Standing and, hence, barred from serving as clergy in any of our churches. Three O&A congregations, along with previous professors and pastors petitioned on my behalf for my reinstatement. Finally, in 2013, when the Church in Indiana dropped the ban, ordaining LGBT persons, my standing was reinstated.

Even though I had been effectively silenced for thirteen years at the height of my ministry, I have returned to church life. I am actively serving as a retired pastor, volunteering to lead a ministry team at Central Christian Church, where my wife and I are members. We are also active members of the GLAD Alliance.

I was a fifth generation Methodist minister. Beginning with the ordination of my great-great grandfather, Thomas King Doty in 1834 by Bishop Osmon C. Baker, our family line continued with my own ordination as a United Methodist Elder in 1978. That rich tradition of 162 years was abruptly broken by my outing in October of 1996. I was then the Senior Pastor of a 3,300-member United Methodist congregation in Corpus Christi, Texas. I began my full-time ministry in that church in 1977 as an Associate Pastor and returned in 1989 as the Senior Pastor. It had been a glorious experience.

The great irony of my outing is that I was then a non-practicing gay man – faithful both to my wife and to the Discipline of the UMC. Regardless, the news sent the church into an uproar. Two protests were hastily organized by members of the congregation. I was told that on the following Communion Sunday, one group planned to jeer when I began preaching. Another group was going to refuse taking Communion from my hands. After gathering at the alter rail, the protesters planned to drink the juice from the small glass, place the piece of uneaten bread in it, and hand it back to me.

Needless to say, I found the prospect of doing any further ministry under those conditions intolerable. I resigned my pulpit eight days after the news broke. Suddenly I had no profession, no income, no home, no marriage, no place in the community. My outing set me on a path searching for a livelihood and another denomination to accept me. I found a blessed home in the United Church of Christ. Twelve jobs and five years later, I received a call to Hammond Street Congregational Church in Bangor, Maine.

May God forgive “the people called Methodist” for the pain and shame that has been wreaked on so many LGBT clergy and those who they love!
</text>

              <text>
When she was five years old, Nadean felt called to go to Nigeria as a missionary, later realizing that only women missionaries were allowed to preach by Southern Baptists. Forty-five years later she matriculated at Pacific School of Religion, and received the M.Div. degree in 1985 and became pastor of the Northside Community Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as a closeted lesbian. When she was called to pastor the University Baptist Church in Minneapolis in 1992, she became the first "out" ordained American Baptist LGBT person to be called to a pastorate.

During the intervening years, Nadean had married, had four children, completed a Ph.D. in Victorian Poetry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, divorced, taught at Eastern Michigan University for 25 years, and recognized that she was a lesbian. As the American Baptist campus minister at the University of Michigan, she began to counsel with LGBT persons, and this became a major ministry while she was pastor at UBC in Minneapolis.

Nadean's donation of a spangled party dress is to exemplify that her life as a lesbian pastor and counselor has not been a hardship but has been like a party. In June of 1996, she and her partner, Sheryl Palmer, expressed their commitment to one another in a service at University Baptist Church, complete with communion and anointing with oil. They share a home on a ten-acre horse farm in Stillwater, Minnesota.
</text>

              <text>
This is one of my favorite pieces in the Shower of Stoles collection. It is made all the more unique when one considers the donor -- a distinguished, snowy-haired grandmother. It is, though, a perfect reflection of Nadean Bishop. Though the path she followed had its share of rocky places, Nadean has embraced life to the fullest, and her ministry has exuded grace, compassion, steadfast love, and much positive energy.

The emotional and spiritual weight of this collection -- the bigotry and oppression, the loss of careers and dreams, even the loss of life in a few cases -- can be overwhelming. This whimsical piece does not allow us to rest in victim hood, but moves us on to a place of faithfulness, love and joy.

1

My Pastor shared the story of her journey, and I was so moved that I decided to make a stole and donate it in her honor.

Ruth was a Lutheran minister who found it necessary to leave the church when she fell in love with another woman. She has since become a minister with the United Church of Christ and our congregation was privileged to call her as a Co-Pastor.

With her permission, I am donating the stole to the Shower of Stoles Project as a way of honoring her and her story.

As I thought about a design concept, I was struck by the similarities between her personal journey and our experiences as we follow the church calendar. So, I designed the stole following the colors and seasons of the church year.

In her book, Things Seen and Unseen: A Year Lived in Faith, Nora Gallagher follows the church calendar as a way to illustrate that "the road to the sacred is paved with the ordinary," so I used excerpts from her book to help explain each section of the stole.

2

ADVENT

The swirling blue and gold fabric represents your formative years. Your faith is being formed with help from your parents, teachers, Pastors, and Sunday School teachers. Ever present through your journey is the Holy Spirit (gold ribbon).

3

CHRISTMAS

The Lutheran Rose honors the Lutheran Church for helping you find your passion and love for Christ, and the stole symbol represents your ordination. The white background invokes the same Christmas feelings of hope and promise for your life, as you enter the ministry.

"They, too, were in the midst of something being called of them and of hearing a voice that would lead them along right pathways and stretch into time."

4

EPIPHANY

Though a design was not included in the stole to represent Epiphany, it is important to include it here. Surely you experienced your own epiphany...

"I want to bring my whole self to church. I don't want to have to leave a part of my history or a piece of myself at the door."

"The church was originally designed, I think, to shape itself to us, not to force us to shape ourselves to it."

5

LENT

The dark purple of the stole represents the period of time when you were forced to choose between two loves... your church or your new-found love.

"What was asked of Jesus is what is asked of us: that we give up illusion - its false promises and its addicting inertia - and come to our senses. That we, as Vaclav Havel would say, 'live within the truth.'"

6

GOOD FRIDAY

Other than the continuing gold ribbon (Holy Spirit) there is no embellishment on the black cloth. You contemplate leaving the ministry. This was your rejection. This was your wilderness. This was your moment of feeling abandoned. This was your tomb... "because of the way the world is organized."

"The Eleventh Station: Jesus is nailed to the cross. Jesus was crucified, not because of a whim, but because of the way the world is organized. It rejected Jesus and eliminated him. But it is God's will to establish the Kingdom in the midst of creation. God does not cease to will it."

7

EASTER

The Holy Spirit is working miracles in your life. You now have a new calling to an open and inclusive church. You can be with your love openly and freely. The dove represents your faith - stronger than ever, and the heart and infinity sign illustrate your love.

"They stood outside the tomb and endured its emptiness. Then they ran outside to tell the others. They gave all they had for something new."

"Out of the chaos and trauma of death, something new is written or revealed. Jesus walked through the curtain, into the Reality blazing behind it, a place he had grasped and apprehended all his life. Then, because he lived fully in hope, fully in love, something happened to him. Nothing kept him, nothing held onto him, the past didn't weigh him down. He returned a more coherent, more real, carrying Reality with him, in a final act of love. The resurrection means that nothing is hopeless anymore."

8

PENTECOST

You are called to the Church of the Nativity, United Church of Christ. You are no longer "passing through territories not your own." How you are ours... we are yours... we are His.

"Pilgrims are persons in motion - passing through territories not their own," writes Richard Niebuhr, "seeking something we might call completion, or perhaps the word clarity will do as well, a goal to which only the spirit's compass points the way."

"This is the craving of the Holy Spirit, the driving passionate voice. It is her hand set against my back. I see now. It is not finished, she whispers. It did not end with the one on the cross."

9

ORDINARY TIME

Now you are in ordinary time - in your own life - bringing your whole self to church - living out the gift of the Holy Spirit. What was extraordinary is now ordinary. (Or is it?)

The final symbol - the Alpha and Omega cross reminds us: "'I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the ending,' saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty."

"In most of the other church seasons, we trace the life of Jesus - from expected arrive to resurrection, Advent to Eastertide. But in Ordinary Time we are in our own lives, living out the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost."

***

"Come now, disturbing Spirit of our God, breathe on these bodily things and me us one body in Christ. Open our graves, unbind our eyes and name us here; touch and heal all that has been buried in us that we need not cling to our pain but may go forth with power to release resurrection in the world. -- Janet Morley
</text>

Presbyterian Church (USA)

Troy, NY

For 14 years I was a parish minister in two different PC(USA) churches.

When I fell in love with a woman, I knew I would have to leave my beloved ministry. I could not with any integrity serve the church, preaching of God's love and justice for all people knowing the PC(USA), and several people in the pew, could not accept me, or worse, would condemn me. Integrity, for me, is the integration of my internal feelings with my external actions. I could have no integrity if I pretended to live one way so that people would accept me, knowing full well this is not who I am.

The sentence, "I found God in myself, and I loved her, I loved her fiercely," became my fully integrated self. Outside the church, I have felt this full integration of me, God, and the world. I was, and am, at peace with God. I am still not at peace with the church.

The Pink Triangle
Dedicated to Rev. Elizabeth Hall
Designed by Quilt Artist Renee Kroner Hoagland

Having been raised to believe we are all equal and should be treated with dignity and respect, it is sad to realize not much has changed in the last 75 years.

75 years ago Hitler started his campaign of terror and hate. Everyone knows about the near annihilation of the Jews. However, few people know the extent of Nazi madness and how many other groups of people were selected for death. As each group was selected for deportation to the death camps, the Nazis needed a way to categorize their captives so they could keep accurate records of their madness. They gave each group a colored triangle to wear on their camp uniforms. Jews wore yellow stars (two triangles), criminals wore green and homosexuals wore pink triangles. There were many others, sadly too many to mention here.

I wanted to express my sadness over the fact that we still find it impossible to accept those members of our society who are different. The Bible teaches us that we are all God's children. Why then, do so many of us believe his love is only for a select few?

This stole is designed to remind us that we still carry old prejudices and more work needs to be done to bring God's love to all. The dark pieced background represents the rigid attitudes and prejudices towards the sexually disenfranchised. As well as the loneliness and despair they must feel by not being able to fulfill their calling to serve the church and live openly. The "Holocaust" triangles remind us the LGBT members of our society are still discriminated against, even those called to serve God.

It is meant to be uncomfortable to look at, thereby forcing us to address our prejudices.</text>

                <text>Rev. Jennifer Paty is the Director of Pilgrim Lodge Camp and Retreat Center, an outdoors ministry of the Maine Conference of the United Church of Christ. The team that hired her said this of her: “Jen’s strong leadership, excellent ministry and social justice experience, steadfast work ethic, and contagious enthusiasm are just a few of the attributes” that won us over. “She brings a wealth of knowledge from overseeing the recreation programs and family services of large US military installations, both here in the United States and overseas.”
Jen served twenty years in the U.S. Navy, is active in Veterans for Peace, has been a pastor and educator, a street minister for the homeless, and all along a human rights activist, including her work with other service members to repeal “Don’t ask Don’t Tell.” Ordained in the Metropolitan Community Church, she served that denomination for a dozen years, including several years in Canada. With her life-partner Amy Blake, Jen also operates a counseling practice utilizing the Imago model of relationship transformation. </text>
