Richard Palleschi Stole Text RICHARD PALLESCHI First Presbyterian Church Ewing, New Jersey After hearing the preaching against homosexuality in the Roman Catholic church, leaving the church in my youth, and abandoning all faith and spirituality (as well as sexuality) in my twenties, I was finally able to come out to myself and others and found a church where all were truly welcomed. My faith and spirituality are mine again. My activity in the church surprises me: serving on a Presbytery Task Force, speaking to church groups, singing in choir. The church has given me personal strength and an understanding of homosexuality. I have watched my church's first openly gay Deacon take our church community to the next plane from "The Pines" to the church, I am reminded of what we all want and need from each other: compassion and understanding. I served as Associate Pastor at Gurnee Community Church in Gurnee, IL, for two years and then moved to West Virginia to do interim ministry work. Withholding information about being lesbian became more damaging than I was willing to tolerate and difficult for the churches I served as well. On January 28, 1995, I was given Ordained Ministerial Standing in the United Church of Christ. I now serve as pastor at the First Congregational Church in Huntington, West Virginia. My partner and I live in the church parsonage and ministry flourishes where I can be open about all aspects of my life. This is a stole that I am no longer able to use. (Note: In early 1996, Cheryl gave us a white Guatemalan stole with the Presbyterian Church's symbol woven into it. This stole was one of 350 that were worn in a week-long public witness at the 1996 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. It was badly damaged in a mishap with an automobile there, which greatly upset the person who had been given the honor of wearing it all week. Rosemarie Wallace Stole Text Rosemarie Wallace Mesa, Arizona Presbytery Moderator Synod Stated Clerk Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 1996 Contribution Story The very brief statement on Rosemarie Wallace's stole does not begin to tell the story of one of the great pioneers in the Presbyterian Church and in the Welcoming movement. Born in 1929 in Baltimore, MD, Rosemarie Wallace was a teacher, counselor and administrator in the Baltimore City public schools for 30 years. At Arlington Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, Rosemarie was first woman to be ordained as a deacon, and later the first woman ordained as elder. She was the first woman commissioner to Baltimore Presbytery and went on to serve as vice-moderator, moderator, and chair of the presbytery's governing council. In the Synod of the Piedmont, she was a member of the Permanent Judicial Commission. Rosemarie was twice elected as a commissioner to the General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church, first in 1978 and again in 1981, where she served as Moderator of the Polity Committee. After moving to Arizona, Rosemarie continued her active work in the church, serving several terms on the Session of Celebration of Life Presbyterian Church, as a commissioner to the Presbytery of Grand Canyon, as chair of that Presbytery's Preparation for Ministry Committee, and as a member of the Women's Ministries and Social Justice and Peacemaking committees, among others. She was elected the first woman Stated Clerk of the Synod of the Southwest, serving three terms from 1989-1994. These accomplishments in and of themselves created a lasting legacy. But these accomplishments are made even more remarkable by the fact that she was also one of the first women to join in the formation of Presbyterians for Gay Concerns in the early 1970's (later renamed Presbyterians for Lesbian and Gay Concerns(PLGC), and now More Light Presbyterians(MLP)), a group openly advocating for the full equality of gays and lesbians in the Presbyterian Church at a time when there was precious little support for their cause. Rosemarie organized the first PLGC committee in Phoenix, AZ and later served two terms as national co-moderator of PLGC. In addition to her work in the More Light Movement, Rosemarie was also active in That All May Freely Serve and the Covenant Network, two other organizations working for equality in the Presbyterian Church. Rosemarie was awarded the 2001 Hope Award by Community Church of Hope in Phoenix, the 2003 David Sindt Leadership Award by More Light Presbyterians, and the 2004 George Brooks Award from Grand Canyon Presbytery for her dedication to social justice, human rights and peacemaking. Rosemarie passed away in 2004. Her long time partner, Tabb Forster, carries on her legacy by serving on the National MLP Board. Anonymous (From a Gay Married Minister in His Late 50's) Stole Text ANONYMOUS From a gay married minister in his late 50's who daily lives with the pain that comes from knowing how people would feel about me if they knew my thoughts and longings, and who shares the pain of his gay and lesbian brothers and sisters who long to be ordained because he knows how much greater his pain might have been if he had been born 20 or 30 years later. Denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) Contribution Date 1995 Contribution Story This anonymous stole has always held a tender place in my heart. The message on this anonymous stole has seemed confusing to some who ask, "Why would his pain be greater now, at a time when there is so much more support for gay people of faith, than it would have been years ago?" Although my knowledge of this anonymous pastor is limited, my understanding is that when he entered seminary, probably around 1960 (he would now be close to 70 years old), virtually no one was "out" in the life of the church. The subject of homosexuality was not raised except in negative ways; even whispered rumors could be enough to ruin a promising career in the church. At that time, the only path he probably felt he could take was to stay in the closet, to marry and to keep his sexual orientation deeply hidden away. Although the pain and loneliness of a closeted life is palpable in his brief narrative, nevertheless he was able to follow his call, to be ordained and have a fulfilling ministry. Had he been born much later, in an era when young people are much freer to come out, many while still in high school, and issues of sexual orientation and gender identity are discussed openly, he might have made different choices. It is possible that he would have been in a supportive enough environment to come out -- before he was married, and before he made the decision to attend seminary. While one deep pain surely would have been lifted, others would have been present, since his coming out would keep him from the ministry that has meant so much to him. It is difficult for some to walk in this man's shoes. Many people who read his story have never known a time without Ellen DeGeneres or Will and Grace. Certainly it is hard for any of us to recall a time when issues of sexuality were not a constant part of church debate. To some, then, these "what ifs" might seem pointless. To a gay man of 70, though, who from his lonely place of hiding has watched the world change at a dizzying speed , the "if onlys" must loom large. I have always been grateful that this fellow pilgrim chose to share a bit of his story with us. As one who spent the first fifteen years of her ministry in the closet, I know that place of pain, too. Someday I hope that the church will repent of the sinful oppression it has wrought upon this unnamed gay man and on so many, many others. In the meantime, I will give thanks for his good ministry, his service to God and to the church that he loves. And I will pray that he knows without doubt that God loves and cherishes him unconditionally!
